人们可以（而且应该）仅凭掌握的二三手外部资料、人生经历的资料记载或者后代的史学家的著作，描写出一个众所圳知的时代。但人们不可能仅凭上述资料描写出他或她的一生。正因为如此，人们不可能像描写其他时代的历史那样来描写20世纪的历史。我恰巧生活在《极端的年代》所描写的这个历史时期，而且从十三四岁起到现在，我一直十分关注公共事务。也就是说，我不是以一个学者的眼光而是以一个同时代人的眼光在观察公共事务，从而形成了自己的见解和想法。就是因为上述原因，在我职业生涯的大部分时间，当我戴着史学家这一职业桂冠时尽可能避免谈论1914年以来的历史，而在以其他身份出现时就并不讳言之。就像他们的行话所说，“我的时代”是指19世纪。尽管我在研究20世纪历史时并没有像为数众多的20世纪史学家那样拥有丰富的文献知识和档案，甚至连一丁点儿的档案资料都没有，但是我认为仍有条件从历史的角度来审视一下从1914年到苏联时代结束这一掐头去尾的20世纪。 当然，要独自一人、甚或以单种语言来了解现今世纪历史的编纂工作是完全不可能的。只有权威的古代史学家或拜占庭帝国的史学家才知道对于那些漫长的历史阶段该写些什么。
